Discovering Normal Rockwell's America

Preparing for Departure

Written By: trevixan - Jun• 12•11

Well .. on Saturday June 25th, Trevor and I are scheduled to leave for Chicago.  I am hoping to make it in three driving days.  That’s 2100+ miles in three days.  First stop will be Evanston, Wyoming.  That’s the longest drive, some 800 miles.

Why the rush?  Well .. there is a reason.  There is an event in Chicago that starts 10 days before the 4th of July.  It’s called Taste of Chicago.  This event is in Grant Park, which is the historic beginning of Route 66.

So, my plan is to get to the Chicago area around the 28th so that we can enjoy some of the sights in Chicago and then begin our journey on Route 66, probably on Sunday, July 3.

There is a lot to see in Chicago, the Willits Tower (formerly known as the Sears Tower), Museum of Science and Industry (one of my personal favorites in Chicago), and a whole lot more.

So, you see, it’s not just going to be a food fest, as there is much more to enjoy.

Feel free to give suggestions as to what we can see in Chicago, Route 66, or even between California and Chicago on Interstate 80.

I love your Route 66 Blog! Looks great hubby! I wish you a wonderful time and look forward to your detailed experiences, pictures, daily updates and safe return. So, on your trip to Chicago, are you planning to take a peek at the Grand Canyon?

Yeah .. I’d love to peak at the Grand Canyon. I’ve never been there before. I know of Williams, Oatman, and Seligman (or something like that). Old towns with even older atmosphere .. that’s what I’m looking for.

This blog is a fantastic idea! I wish you both a wonderful time on your journey thru small towns, USA! Sounds like a great platform, adding a bit more interest rather than just a focus on a food fest! I hope to glean a bit of an education from reading about your adventures! I have not personally pulled out a map and checked out Route 66 for myself, so do not really know what treasures you will be finding, but I will be following you on your blog!

Travel safe, and have a great time!

Great quality time with your son. I LOVE Chicago! That sounds great. The architect cruises are pretty cool too. They show you where Lincoln accepted his parties nomination to run for president?

This is such a great thing to do. You both look like you are having a trip of a lifetime. Really enjoy seeing all of your sights. Some places I remember seeing on the DiDrDives show. Question? Who is Norman Rockwell? Really miss you guys back home.
